The featured artist for the month of October is David Munford. David
is a painter and printmaker whose work deals primarily with the
landscape. Originally from Colorado, he studied painting and
printmaking at the Art Institute of Boston, later relocating to the
Catskill Mountains of New York State, where he currently lives and
works. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Catskills and Hudson
Valley region, he often paints on location, “en plein air.” Through his
printmaking he further explores the idea of landscape as a
representation of our human connection to the natural world, often
employing a more abstract approach in his work.
For this show David said: “I wanted to exhibit some new paintings
that I’ve been working on. It’s a series of paintings that represent a
new direction in my work that I’m exploring. Unlike my plein air
pieces, which tend to be small, these are larger canvases, done in
the studio. The subject matter is similar but with these I wanted to
convey more a sense of expansive space; open fields, water, sky, more breathing room. Breathing is very important, especially in
these times. Becoming aware of our breathing helps to calm the
mind. Everyone benefits.”
A long-time member of the Wurtsboro Art Alliance, Munford
currently helps organize the WAA Plein Air Artist Group outings. He
is a member and artist-in-residence of The Old Stone House of
Hasbrouck, in Woodbourne, NY, and member of the Woodstock
Artists Association and Museum, in Woodstock, NY. He holds a B.A.
from Empire State College and an MFA from the State University of
New York in New Paltz.
These members tirelessly volunteer their time to the operation and promotion of the WAA.
